Recycle, Reuse, Re-love

In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to recycle just about everything, from general household waste, to clothing and furniture and soft furnishings. I'm an avid fan of the painted furniture that I see on social media and specialist websites. Some of the furniture being recycled would simply end up in landfill, if it wasn't for the creative skills and hours of painstaking and meticulous paint, decoupage or new moldings, that I see on US Facebook pages like Styling & Staging Your Furniture for Sale. However, closer to home refinisher, Rosie at Roosters Furniture does an amazing job, meaning less in landfill and more beauty in your home.

It makes perfect sense to me, that rather than buying new (often badly manufactured) inferior wood or composite furniture, that you can find solid wood pieces, solidly built with attention to detail either on line or in the various charity shops or junk shops, depending on where you live. You may even have them in your home, but they seem dated or just 'not right'. The fact that because it's not the right stain, or colour, doesn't mean you have to instantly dismiss it, if you can find a talented and professional 'recycler' - you will have a beautiful and totally unique piece for your lounge, your bedroom or even your garden.

The next time you're walking passed a charity shop and you spot a beautiful pair of curtains or maybe just single one, that won't fit your windows, but might make a stunning box cushion or a set of scatter cushions or a fabulous bean bag, go for it ! I'd love to hear from you.

Right now, I'm in the middle of creating some new cushions for an outdoor sofa and a chair. But last year I was able to recover some tatty seat pads and make some new cushions for a client with a rather striking fabric found in the local fabric shop in the sale. A quick spray with a waterproof conditioner meant that they were suitable for outdoor use. Although, I would recommend you keep them undercover when the rain comes, to prevent a soggy bottom !
